YOUTH PROGRAMMING

Our Mini Dance Program is for dancers ages 6 and under. Pre-Primary and Primary classes have the opportunity to perform in our Annual Year-End Performance!

Our Youth Recreational Program is home to dedicated dancers ages 7 - 18 seeking well-rounded, high caliber training. All classes have the opportunity to perform in our Annual Year-End Performance!

LEVELS

  • Do you and your baby love to move together? In this dance fitness class, you get to participate in your own class while having your baby snuggled into you and strapped into your carrier. This 45-minutes class consists of a basic warm-up followed by a set line dance choreography for you and your Baby to boogie down together, just as you do at home!

  • These classes are for dancers ages 1.5-3 years old who dance with their parents / guardians. The goal is to integrate our youngest dancers into a class setting, develop their movement skills and coordination, and encourage musicality!

    CREATIVE MOVEMENT: Students ages 1-3 are introduced to concepts of dance through creative movement and expression. Dancers embark on magical journeys and explore dance through play and imagination.

    INTRO TO DANCE: This class introduces students ages 2-3.5 years concepts of dance through creative movement and expression with the intention of preparing dancers for more structured dance training in the future.

    CIRCUS: This class focuses on acrobatics, gymnastics skills, and rhythm, learning the fundamentals of Acrobatics in a safe environment. This is a great class for little ones ages 2-3.5 who love jumping, balancing, and being upside down to learn awesome tricks with the support of an adult!

  • Offering Ballet and Jazz 2025/2026!

    Young dancers' pre-primary years are pivotal periods of their development when their talents blossom and their love of dance is forged. For the first time, students are not required to have a grown-up accompany them to class.

    The focus of our Pre-Primary classes is on creative concepts, basic movements, and responding to rhythm and musical patterns. Developing correct posture, recognizing common dance terminology related to ballet and jazz methods of dance, and playing and creating are all part of this. Classes are 30-45 minutes long, and the students are encouraged to participate in the year-end performance at The Grand Theater.

  • Ballet: At this level, the focus is on creativity and the development of correct posture, building physical strength, and acquiring flexibility. Children in this class develop self-discipline, increased attention span, and response to rhythm and musical patterns. This class is a prelude to formal ballet instruction. Classes are 45 minutes long, once a week and the children participate in the year-end performance.

    Jazz: A high-energy dance has a sparkly liveliness that sets it apart from traditional dance forms, such as classical ballet. Students in this class can expect to experiment with different styles of jazz, build technique, and find their performance quality with exercises in the center and across the floor.

    Hip Hop: Primary Hip Hop is a mix of hip hop, breakdancing and creative movement exploration. This class is a brand new offering for KSD students and will prepare students for classes such as Beginner Hip Hop, Beginner Breakdance, etc.

    Tap: Our tap classes are based in the Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus. With a focus on rhythm and musicality, dancers will learn tap technique and progressions using the feet as their instruments.

  • Beginner classes for students ages 7–8 with little or no formal dance training. Students are introduced to the fundamental basics of dance technique, musicality, coordination, and classroom etiquette.

  • For students with 1–2 years of previous dance experience. Emphasis is placed on developing strong foundational skills, proper alignment, coordination, and confidence in movement.

  • For students who have established basic dance skills and are ready to expand their technical vocabulary. Dancers continue to build strength, flexibility, and artistry while introducing more challenging combinations and movement patterns.

  • For students demonstrating solid technical foundations and increasing body awareness. Greater focus is placed on precision, performance quality, turns, jumps, and more complex choreography.

  • For students who have acquired strong basic skills but are not yet advanced in their training. More complex and advanced technical challenges are introduced, including larger jumps, pirouettes, increased flexibility requirements, and greater artistic expression.

  • Intermediate/Advanced level dancers who demonstrate a high degree of technical proficiency. Classes focus on refining technique, improving consistency, developing artistry, and mastering advanced movement vocabulary.

    Placement in Level 6 classes is only at the recommendation of the AD

  • Advanced dancers with extensive training and strong technical and artistic capabilities. Students are challenged with professional-level expectations, advanced choreography, performance skills, and preparation for pre-professional or post-secondary dance opportunities

    Placement in Level 7 classes is only at the recommendation of the AD

  • For students between the ages of 12-18, who wish to begin a brand new style of moving at the Beginner level

STYLES

  • Acro developed alongside early 20th-century vaudeville and circus traditions, blending classical dance technique with acrobatic movement. The style emphasizes strength, flexibility, balance, and control while seamlessly connecting skills through fluid transitions. In class, students will work on foundational acrobatic skills such as balances, inversions, rolls, bridges, walkovers, and partnered poses, while learning how to move in and out of them with grace and intention. Equal focus is placed on safe technique, artistry, and performance quality, encouraging dancers to present acrobatic skills as expressive movement rather than isolated tricks.

  • Ballet is a style of dance that is rooted deeply in history. Emerging in the early 1500s out of entertainment dances performed in the courts of the Italian Renaissance, it evolved into a concert dance form as it spread to countries such as France and Russia.

    KSD is proud to train our dancers in the Cecchetti Ballet Method. By offering high-quality training, our students are able to build a strong technical movement foundation as well as learn dance theory to be able to take their dance further.

    KSD provides Cecchetti Method training in Ballet and classes are based on age & ability.

  • This high-energy class introduces the fundamentals of breakdancing (also known as breaking), including footwork, freezes, and power moves. Rooted in 1970s hip-hop culture from the Bronx, breaking blends athleticism, rhythm, and personal style. Students will build strength, coordination, and musicality while exploring the history and foundations of the form.

  • Contemporary dance was established in the early 20th century to reinvent movement and question the role of art in society. The style has since gained dozens of different sub-styles and coined some of the most famous dancers and movement artists, such as Martha Graham.

    KSD focuses on teaching the Limon technique and is heavily influenced by the work done by Peter Boneham. Classwork is progressive and includes a full floor barre, center work, across the floor, and improvisational exercises while expanding on concepts in contemporary technique, contact improvisation, and the choreographic progress.

  • Hip Hop has its roots in the streets of the Bronx. Inspired by many types of African dance, the technique includes many famous styles such as pop & lock, waacking, house, krump, and many more.

    By reviewing foundational Hip Hop steps, our students learn to identify various types of rhythms and styles found in popular Hip Hop music. This class is intended to teach students how to perform freestyle movements with confidence.

  • Developed in the mid 1800s from African-American social dances, jazz is a high-energy dance with a sparkly liveliness that sets it apart from traditional dance forms.

    Students in this class can expect to experiment with different styles of jazz, build technique, and performance quality with exercises in the center and across the floor. They will also be given opportunities for improvisation.

  • Although the exact origins of Lyrical dance remain unknown, it grew in popularity within Broadway and studio dance scenes in the 70s and has been a studio staple ever since. It is a fluid and musically influenced dance style that tells a story, and incorporates movements from ballet, contemporary and jazz styles.

  • Tap is a hybrid form of percussive dance born in America out of African and European traditions. Tap evolved alongside African-American music that would become known as jazz.
