Call for Interim Artistic Director for 2024-2025 Season

Position Title: Interim Artistic Director
Located:
on site at Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, Kingston Ontario
Contract Length: May 2024 – May 2025 (This is a maternity leave replacement.)
Schedule: Sundays to Thursdays or Tuesdays to Saturdays (subject to change depending on class time).

Annual salary range: $45,000-55,000

The artistic director is the primary leader of KSD supporting all roles and responsibilities that KSD encompasses, reporting directly to the KSD Board of Directors. This interim role will ensure the smooth operation of the School with its programming and performance, as well as daily management of the studio and all staff.

Artistic Programming

  • Cultivate a passion for dance in students while meeting AODA requirements, and that KSD is inclusive of all persons.

  • Operationalize the existing artistic programming in alignment with KSD’s mission and strategic plan.

  • Ensure timely implementation of projects, programs and planning.

  • Teach a minimum of 10 hours per week.

  • Lead recruitment of teaching staff through end-to-end recruitment and employee management.

  • Coach and mentor KSD staff based on needs and development assessment and analysis.

  • Choreograph (KYDE) and all other performance related programming, seeking opportunities and innovation.

Community Engagement

  • Lead KSD in the community through membership, leadership and talent.

  • Represent KSD in community events to raise the school profile, exposure, to ensure a positive image and attract talent in all aspects to KSD.

  • Foster creative partnerships with other artists, dancers, community, and business partners in support of the school’s strategic plan, with a focus on aligning this with the KSD Mission and Vision.

  • Assist in the application of grants and sponsorships for programming and events.

Marketing and Communication

  • Manage marketing and communication planning and implementation.

  • Lead KSD’s branding including all print and digital formats, merchandise, and image.

  • Evaluate and improve marketing and communication plan to ensure the success for KSD.

Leadership and Management

  • Manage the annual budget ensuring financial sustainability of the School.

  • Lead or participate in board committees to support various functions of the school.

  • Supervise staff to maintain standards in customer service, studio upkeep and cleanness.

  • Follow and maintain policies and procedures of the school, including training staff to adhere to the policies and procedures.

  • Deal with staff and student issues, ensuring effective conflict resolution and communication.

  • Create and maintain a positive and inclusive working and learning environment for all students, staff, the Board and stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement all programming and events.

  • Ensure the health and safety of all dancers, staff and community members who access KSD programming and attend events.

Required Qualifications

  • Formal post secondary and/or professional training in dance in one or more of the dance styles taught at KSD.

  • Over 3 years of experience in teaching and performance.

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a management role in a community-based arts organization.

Required Competencies

  • Ability to implement recreational and pre-professional dance programs.

  • Ability to teach dance classes in an effective, supportive, and inclusive manner.

  • Ability to choreograph for events and end-of-year shows.

  • Ability to motivate staff and dancers, providing supervision and coaching to achieve goals and standards.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders (dancers, families, community, staff and board members).

  • Ability to resolve conflicts by using active listening techniques and finding creative solutions.

  • Ability to complete administrative tasks such as budgeting, scheduling, marketing and maintaining the studio operation.

  • Ability to represent the school in the community.

Working Conditions

This role will work out of the office and studio pace at KSD. It is forward facing with the KSD community and its employees.
